The basic materials are ripe peels of citrus fruits of the Rutaceae family, mainly sweet oranges, navel oranges and mandarins. The white pith layer is the optimum substrate for extraction since it has the highest concentration of natural hesperidin. Our suppliers grow citrus in regulated circumstances where they can maintain soil pH between 6.0-7.5 to ensure optimal concentration of active chemicals.

Solubility & Stability Characteristics

Standard product powder has little solubility in cold water but is soluble in dilute alkaline solutions, methanol and ethanol. We have developed cyclodextrin-modified versions for increased water dispersibility, which dissolve quickly in cold and hot water and avoid precipitation in liquid formulations.

Temperature stability is still quite good up to 65°C, however after a long time above 80°C oxidation and discolouration can occur. The ideal pH window for long-term stability is 4.0-7.5, with high acidity causing crystallisation and strong alkalinity causing deterioration. The dry powder is stable for up to 24 months in sealed, light-protected containers. UV protection is required for aqueous solutions to prevent loss of oxidative action.

Manufacturing Process

We start our extraction by carefully sorting and washing citrus peels and then drying them at low temperatures (40-45 °C) to protect the bioactive chemicals. The dried material is ground to a 20-30 mesh size, to give optimum surface area for solvent contact. For the more demanding criteria we use ethanol procedures for cleaner extracts. We use dilute alkaline water extraction or ethanol-water reflux extraction depending on the purity targets.

After extraction, the pH is adjusted to cause crystallisation, which allows separation of the crude hesperidin from water-soluble contaminants. The filtrate was then vacuum concentrated at low temperature below 65 °C to avoid thermal damage. The key phase of purification is adsorption on macroporous resin; for a product with 98% purity, multi-stage cascade resin systems with gradient elution using ethanol are used.

Secondary concentration and decolorisation with activated carbon precede recrystallisation to remove oxidised chemicals. High purity grades are subjected for two gradient recrystallisations to remove maximum impurity. The crystals are washed, centrifuged to remove water and then hoover dried in the dark. For water soluble variations we employ cyclodextrin inclusion modification. Final procedures are grinding to specification, full batch blending and vacuum sealed packaging in aluminium foil bags in moisture-proof cardboard drums
